Nearly half a million people are sitting in jail (awaiting trial) right now in the U.S. Many are there simply because they cannot afford to pay bail. More than 10 states have made changes to their bail practices and places like Illinois have ended their use of cash bail entirely. We traveled to Michigan-a state poised to pass reform this year—to meet a young woman who could not afford bail at age 17.
